Fat Tyre Electric Bike Australia: Buying Guide & Models

Choosing a fat tyre electric bike in Australia? Work through this checklist on legal class, motor, battery, suspension and four real Ampd Bros models.

fat tyre electric bike

A fat tyre electric bike is a pedal-assist bike on tyres far wider than a normal commuter's, so it floats over sand, loose gravel and broken bitumen instead of digging in. The four models we stock from Ampd Bros look similar in a photo but differ a lot in motor torque, battery size, suspension and, most importantly, where you are allowed to ride them. Treat this page as a checklist, and keep it open while you shop. Work through it in order and you will know which bike fits before you open a single product page. Shops and search engines use plenty of labels for the same machine, from a cycle fat tyre to a fat tyre bicycle, and some shoppers even search in French for a bicyclette fat bike. The decision points below are identical whatever you call it.

Most Ampd Bros e-bikes are sold in two versions, and you choose one at checkout. The 250W road-compliant version limits pedal assist to 25 km/h and limits the throttle to a 6 km/h walk assist. The off-road version is for private property only. The choice is made at purchase and cannot be modified later, so be honest about where you will actually ride.

The 250W road-compliant version

This is the right pick if your ride starts on a street, a shared path or a bike lane. Rules still vary by state, so read your own state's page before you buy. The NSW Government e-bike rules and Queensland's Street Smarts e-bike page are good starting points, and our e-bike laws guide pulls the national picture together.

The off-road version and the ACE-X Demon

The off-road setting suits a farm, a large block or a track on private land. The ACE-X Demon goes further: its 1,000W motor is off-road only, and there is no compliant option. If a bike is going on a public road, this is not the one.

A seven-point checklist for any fat tyre electric bike

Print this, or screenshot it, and tick each line before you add anything to your cart.

  1. Legal class: road-compliant 250W or off-road, locked in at purchase.
  2. Torque: 65 to 95 N.m across the four models, which decides how hills and soft ground feel.
  3. Battery energy in watt-hours, not just the Ah figure.
  4. Suspension: none listed, front only, or front and rear.
  5. Frame style and seat height for the person who will ride it most.
  6. Maximum load: 120 kg or 180 kg, rider plus bags.
  7. Warranty, delivery and what the warranty excludes.

What makes an electric fat bike strong: motor and torque

Continuous watts are capped, torque is not

Every road-compliant model here uses a 250W continuous motor, so watts will not separate them. Torque does. The Stubbie S3 makes 65 N.m, the ACE Adventure 80 N.m, and the ACE PRO and ACE-X Demon 95 N.m. Torque is the twisting force at the wheel, and it is what you feel when you start on a steep driveway or push through soft ground. The Demon's 1,000W rating is why it sits in its own off-road category. All four list parental controls, which is handy if a teenager or a partner will also be borrowing the bike.

Battery size and range, without the marketing gloss

Work out watt-hours yourself

Watt-hours are volts multiplied by amp-hours (Wh = V x Ah). It is the fairest way to compare packs:

  • Stubbie S3: 48V x 15Ah = 720Wh, range up to 60 km.
  • ACE Adventure: 48V x 20Ah = 960Wh, range up to 80 km.
  • ACE PRO: 48V x 25Ah = 1,200Wh, range up to 100 km.
  • ACE-X Demon: 52V x 25Ah = 1,300Wh, range up to 100 km.

"Up to" figures are best case. Soft sand, hills, a heavy load and a headwind all pull the real number down, so buy a pack bigger than your usual loop needs.

Looking after the pack

Lithium packs last longer when you avoid leaving them flat or fully charged for weeks, a point Battery University explains well. For charging and storage at home, follow Queensland Fire's lithium-ion guidance.

Suspension, brakes and frame

The ACE Adventure has an adjustable front fork. The ACE PRO and the ACE-X Demon have suspension at both ends, which matters on corrugated tracks. The Stubbie S3 listing does not specify suspension, so its comfort comes mostly from tyre volume. Brakes step up in the same order: 160mm rotors with 2-piston calipers on the Stubbie, 203mm 2-piston on the Adventure, and 203mm 4-piston on the PRO and Demon.

Step-through or step-over

The ACE Adventure and ACE PRO come in both frame styles. The Stubbie S3 is a step-over frame, and the step-through version is the Stubbie-S S3 at the same price. Seat heights run from 780 to 920mm on the Stubbie to 890 to 950mm on the PRO, so check yours against your inseam.

Stubbie S3, the entry point

At $2,590 it is the cheapest of the four and a sensible first bike for lighter riders on shorter loops. The lower 120 kg maximum load is the main limit to check.

ACE Adventure, the all-rounder

The ACE Adventure adds a bigger battery, adjustable front suspension and a 180 kg load rating for $700 more than the Stubbie. Most buyers who ride trails and streets alike land here.

ACE PRO, for rougher ground

The PRO costs $3,990 against the Adventure's $3,290, a $700 step. For that you get 25Ah instead of 20Ah, rear suspension, four-piston brakes and 95 N.m. It is worth it if your regular loop is rough or hilly.

ACE-X Demon, off-road only

The ACE-X Demon is a different animal: 1,000W, 52V 25Ah, and strictly for private property. It is the only one here that stretches towards the electric dirt bike end of the market.

Which electric fat bike for which rider

  • Light riders on short loops and a tight budget: Stubbie S3.
  • Mixed street and trail riding: ACE Adventure.
  • Rough tracks, hills or long days out: ACE PRO.
  • Private land and maximum power: ACE-X Demon.
  • Smaller or younger riders who need a lower, lighter machine: browse the electric mini bikes range instead.

There is no single winner. The right bike is the one whose legal class, battery and suspension match your ride. Overseas sites call the whole category fat tire electric bicycles, but the Australian rules and the Australian warranty are what matter here.

Five mistakes that cost buyers money

  • Choosing on top speed. On a road-compliant version, assist stops at 25 km/h on every model, so the extra money buys torque, battery and suspension instead.
  • Ignoring the legal class. It cannot be changed after purchase, and a wrong choice is expensive.
  • Buying the smallest battery for a long loop. Range figures are best-case, and soft ground and hills shorten them.
  • Skipping the seat-height check. A bike that is too tall or too short for you is tiring and unsafe at low speed.
  • Forgetting wear items. Tyres, tubes, brake pads and seats are excluded from the warranty, so budget for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a fat wheel bicycle and a fat tyre electric bike?

Mostly the motor. A fat wheel bicycle is a casual name for any bike on extra-wide tyres, with or without a motor. A fat tyre electric bike adds a battery and motor, so it climbs and carries loads more easily. The Ampd Bros models we stock all pair wide tyres with a 250W pedal-assist motor or, for the ACE-X Demon, an off-road-only 1,000W motor.

How do the cruisers differ from the other models in this guide?

The Chubbie and Riptide cruisers use 26-inch wheels, while the Stubbie and ACE models use 20-inch wheels. Cruisers have a relaxed upright seating position and suit beach paths and flat commutes. Our Chubbie vs Riptide comparison goes through each cruiser in detail.

What is a typical e bike price for a cruiser or fat tyre model?

In terms of electric cycle price in Australia, the Riptide 3 cruiser starts at $2,190, and the Chubbie 3 is $3,490. The wide-tyre models run from $2,590 for the Stubbie S3 up to $4,990 for the ACE-X Demon. Battery size and suspension explain most of the gap, so compare watt-hours and brakes rather than just the ticket price.

Would a cruiser be better for my daily commute?

It can be, if your route is mostly smooth and you value a comfortable upright position. Cruisers share the same 250W road-compliant option, 25 km/h pedal-assist limit and Shimano 7-speed gearing as the wide-tyre bikes. For gravel, sand or rough tracks, a model with suspension such as the ACE PRO is usually the better tool.

Is there an ebike for sale in Australia with a warranty and nationwide delivery?

Yes. Ampd Bros e-bikes are delivered nationwide by Toll Ipec with a signature required, and adult models carry a 2-year nationwide warranty for manufacturer faults. Tyres, tubes, brake pads and seats are wear items and are excluded. Freight is free over $1,500, and the warranty and service page explains how claims work.
