Compare kids ebike models in Australia: EVO Racing 16, 18 and 20 inch, the Lil Rippa fat tyre and the Warrior SX-E500, by motor, battery, range, speed and price.

EVO Racing 16 inch kids electric bike, one of the kids ebike models compared by motor, battery and price

A kids ebike is a small electric bike for children, and the right one depends on the child's height and age, the motor power and the battery. This guide compares the childs electric bike models we stock from Ampd Bros and RFN, using the specifications in our product listings. All of these are designed for private property and supervised off-road riding, not for public roads, and they should be used with a helmet and protective gear.

EVO Racing 16 inch

The EVO Racing 16 inch has a 350W brushless motor, a 24V 5Ah battery, up to 15 km of range and a 25 km/h top speed, with a 16 inch wheel, a seat height of 620 to 760 mm and a maximum load of 50 kg. It has parental controls and hydraulic disc brakes. It is $1,599 AUD.

EVO Racing 18 inch

The EVO Racing 18 inch has a 500W motor, a 36V 5Ah battery, up to 15 km of range and a 30 km/h top speed, with a seat height of 660 to 760 mm and a 50 kg maximum load. It is $1,999 AUD.

EVO Racing 20 inch

The EVO Racing 20 inch has a 750W motor, a 36V 10Ah battery, up to 20 km of range and a 35 km/h top speed, with a seat height of 665 to 850 mm and a 70 kg maximum load. It is $2,399 AUD.

Lil Rippa 16 inch fat tyre

The Lil Rippa 16 inch kids electric bike has a 500W hub motor and a 36V 13Ah, 468Wh removable battery, with 40 km or up to 120 minutes of range in Eco mode. The top speed is up to 35 km/h and can be limited. It weighs 20.58 kg, has 16 x 4.0 inch fat tyres and is recommended for riders 95 cm and taller, with a 100 kg maximum load. It is $1,999 AUD.

WARRIOR KIDS SX-E500

The Warrior Kids SX-E500 has a 500W motor (700W peak) with chain drive and a 36V 7.5Ah hot-swappable battery, up to 25 km or 1 hour 15 minutes of run time, a speed limit that can be adjusted up to 35 km/h, and 14 x 2.4 inch all-terrain tyres. It is $1,899 AUD, down from $2,299.

How to choose

Pick by the child's height and the bike's seat height range first. Choose a bike with speed limiting or parental controls. Compare battery size and listed range, because a bigger battery means longer riding between charges. The Lil Rippa has the largest listed battery of the group.

Warranty and delivery

These bikes are supplied and shipped by Ampd Bros from the Gold Coast, Queensland, with a 1-year supplier warranty (the Warrior SX-E500 is 1 year or 3,000 km under the RFN terms), and a signature is required on delivery. Supplier delivery estimates run from 2 to 6 days to QLD up to 16 days to WA and TAS.

Battery energy and value

Battery energy tells you how long a kids ebike can run. The EVO Racing 16 inch has a 24V 5Ah battery, about 120Wh. The EVO 18 inch has a 36V 5Ah battery, about 180Wh. The EVO 20 inch has a 36V 10Ah battery, about 360Wh. The Lil Rippa lists 468Wh, and the Warrior SX-E500 has a 36V 7.5Ah battery, about 270Wh. Dividing the price by watt-hours, the EVO 16 costs about $13.33 per Wh, the EVO 18 about $11.11, the EVO 20 about $6.66, the Warrior about $7.03 and the Lil Rippa about $4.27, so the Lil Rippa gives the most battery for the price.

Sizing a kids ebike by height

Check the seat height range. The EVO 16 inch is 620 to 760 mm, the EVO 18 inch is 660 to 760 mm and the EVO 20 inch is 665 to 850 mm. The Lil Rippa has a 560 mm seat height and is recommended for riders 95 cm and taller. The Warrior has 14 inch wheels. A smaller child on a bike that is too big cannot reach the ground, so size down rather than up.

Maximum rider weight

The EVO 16 and 18 inch are listed at a 50 kg maximum load, the EVO 20 inch at 70 kg and the Lil Rippa at 100 kg. Always respect the limit, because it affects brakes, frame and battery performance.

Speed control

Most of these bikes can be limited. The EVO models have parental controls, the Lil Rippa top speed of up to 35 km/h can be limited, and the Warrior has an adjustable speed limit up to 35 km/h. Start with the limiter low and raise it as the child improves.

Fat tyres or all-terrain tyres

The Lil Rippa has 16 x 4.0 inch fat off-road tyres, which grip softer ground such as sand and loose soil. The Warrior has 14 x 2.4 inch all-terrain tyres. The EVO bikes have 16, 18 and 20 inch wheels with hydraulic disc brakes. Match the tyre to where the child rides.

What counts as a mini bike

Searches for a mini bike dirt bike often mean a small powered bike for children. The kids electric bikes in this guide are small, lightweight and quiet, and our mini electric bikes page lists larger compact models. For a first petrol-style feel in electric, see our childs dirt bike guide.

Warranty and delivery

The EVO and Lil Rippa bikes carry a 1-year Ampd Bros nationwide warranty on kids e-bikes. The Warrior is 1 year or 3,000 km under the RFN terms. Bikes are shipped from Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast by Toll Ipec with a signature required on delivery. Supplier estimates are 2 to 6 days to QLD, 5 to 10 days to NSW, 6 to 14 days to VIC, SA, ACT and NT and up to 16 days to WA and TAS.

Maintenance and care

Check tyre pressure before every ride, keep the chain or drive clean, check the brakes and fasteners and store the battery cool and dry. Charge on a hard surface and never leave a battery charging unattended; our e-bike safety guide explains battery safety in detail.

Where kids can ride

These bikes are designed for private property and supervised riding, not public roads or paths. Check your state rules before riding anywhere else.

Teaching a child to ride an electric bike

Start in an open, flat private area with the speed limiter on its lowest setting. Practise starting, stopping and turning before anything else, and teach the child to use both brakes. Stand close and supervise every ride. Raise the speed limit one step at a time only when the child is consistently in control, and never leave a child to ride alone on a bike they have not mastered.

Helmet fit and protective gear

A helmet should sit level on the head, fit snugly without moving, and fasten under the chin. Add gloves, sturdy shoes, long sleeves and trousers, and knee and elbow guards for off-road riding. Replace a helmet after a significant impact, and buy the child's gear at the same time as the bike so it is never skipped.

A simple charging routine

Charge on a hard non-flammable surface, use the charger supplied with the bike and do not leave the battery charging overnight in a living area or while you sleep. Let the battery cool after a ride before charging. The NSW Government lithium-ion battery page lists the advice, and our e-bike safety guide summarises it.

Fat tyre or standard kids ebike?

Fat tyres give more grip and float on soft surfaces such as sand and loose soil, which suits a child riding on a farm, a beach or a bush track. A standard all-terrain tyre rolls more easily on hard ground and tends to suit a child who rides on a flat, firm private area. The Lil Rippa is the fat tyre option in this comparison, and the EVO Racing and Warrior bikes use more conventional tyres. Choose the tyre for where the child will actually ride, and revisit the choice as the child grows.
